Dean's Dog

Heute ist Dienstag der dritte September. It was so, SO hard to get out of bed this morning. I was so cozy, and I could barely keep my eyes open. I then battled the yawns all through German class. So I decided that if I worked on my homework between lunch and my academic advising appointment, I would permit myself to go home, eat a snack, then take a nap. And that I did! That being said, today was not incredibly eventful. There are a couple honorable mentions:

I did a couple errands today - I went to the bakery for a loaf of sandwich brot, to the Spar (one of the many grocery store chains) for a handful of items, and I stopped into a stationary/gift store that looked intriguing. I did not speak a word of English at any of the three locations! Although this limits my conversations, and I can't understand everything people say to me, I can get the just  and respond to some degree. For example, in the stationary store, after the clerk and I greeted each other (this is customary, as is saying good-bye or thank you on the way out) he asked if I needed help with anything, or something of that nature. I responded, "nein, alles gut, danke" (no, everything is good, thank you). I guess I never realized how much of a question is portrayed in tone of voice and body language. (And thank goodness for that!)

As I have mentioned, German has been challenging, partially because some aspects of the language are very difficult, partially due to the speed of the course, but also in part due to the instruction style. I prefer learning rules, then applying them. However, a lot of times we start a worksheet then learn the rules as we go. Sometimes I leave class incredibly confused and with no solidification of what we have learned in class. But today I found a couple online guides to certain grammar lessons that my understanding had been fuzzy on, which really helped to clear things up! And when I think about how much German I knew eight days ago, I realize that I am picking up a lot.

Well, although I did take a nap this afternoon, ich bin muede (I am tired). It’s bed time on this side of the planet. Gute nacht!
