I worked on homework at chatted with my housemate and friend that were working on their video blog. It was nice to start my homework, and be social at the same time! At about three, when my friends were done with their vlog, and we couldn't stay in from the sunny fall weather for another minute, Andrea and I started our adventure out to the Zentralfriedhof cemetery.
In the eleventh district, the cemetery is pretty far south-east of my apartment. I am constantly amazed at the amount of land within the city limits of Vienna. It was fun to see a new part of the city! Andrea and I rode two subways and a tram a few stops before arriving at the cemetery (which is huge!). We didn't walk through all of it, but walked around a bit in the middle section (where the rich and/or famous people are buried). The cemetery was built in the mid-nineteenth century, and the headstones in the middle are grand and romantic in style.
The weather was perfect for a walk! The sun was shining, sky was blue, air was crisp, and the trees are just starting to transform and drop their leaves. We took advantage of that and wandered along the trails. Our mail goal, however, was to visit Beethoven and his fellow composers. Beethoven's physical resting place has changed three times, placing him in Zentralfriedenhof in 1888.
Below is a picture of me with my main man, Beethoven.
And here's Andrea with Brahms and Strauss. Such elaborate grave markers!
It was a fun day with adventure, relaxed strolls, and some productivity! Enjoy your weekend.
Hi Amalia-- This is Lori, Marisa's mom. Marisa showed me the Sound of Music tour pictures from your blog because we're such big Sound of Music fanatics (we're planning to do the tour sometime soon). I just wanted to tell you that after I read that blog entry, I ended up reading another, and pretty soon was addicted. (Not quite as addicting as Gilmore Girls, but I did stay up quite late reading!) Your writing really makes me feel like I'm there, and your photos are great, too! (What kind of camera are you using? Just how wide-angle is that lens?) You do a great job of capturing the experiences and sharing your reactions to them. Thanks for giving me a virtual travel experience from the comfort of my Portland living room!

p.s. I was a music major too, and Beethoven is my favorite composer, so I loved seeing the pictures here at the cemetery.
Hello Lori!
DeleteI love your comment! Thanks for taking an interest in my travels, and I hope I do your virtual trip justice. You definitely need to get to Salzburg someday to experience the Sound of Music tour! You would both love it! (Has Marisa told you that I am a Gilmore Girls addict as well?!!)
I actually just use my iPhone to take pictures, and use the panoramic function occasionally to get more in the picture. I'm not much of a photographer, I just try to capture moments and scenery as best as possible, then take about seven pictures of the same thing and hope something turns out! Plus, my phone is small and always with me!
